Twin fin: let it run
Two large fins create little drag and favour natural acceleration. The B52 likes long arcs, settled rail changes and a ride that lets the board carry through the section.
Quad: turn speed into projection
Four fins distribute hold and create more projection as pressure increases. The B54 keeps fish speed while accepting a more vertical path and tighter turns.
In weak surf
The twin feels free and produces little resistance. The quad supports surfers who want to push through their feet to create projection. Width, rocker and foam remain just as important as fin count.
When the wave gets hollow
A quad creates an extra point of reference and holds its line under pressure. A well-sized twin remains controllable but asks for a smoother reading of the line and accurate rail placement.
The useful shortcut
Choose the B52 for glide, open arcs and a released feeling. Look at the B54 if you want fish character while surfing closer to the pocket.
History gives useful reference points. Your board must then answer your waves, build and desired feel.
